I sat down with The Recovering People Pleaser, who was kind enough to share a few words with us. This is what she had to say:
Me: So, what actually is a People Pleaser?
Me: A people pleaser is a person who gives a lot of importance to pleasing others. A People Pleaser is someone who feels the need to put everyone else first above oneself all the time, say YES to almost absolutely everything and spend a great deal of time doing things for other people. In other words, we’re often doormats (yes, there is such a thing as DoorMat Syndrome) for others to treat us like shit because we rarely turn down requests or assert our needs.
Me: Is being a People Pleaser a bad thing?
Me: To the people we aim to please, it’s not. For us, it is. We often get taken advantage of, get asked to contribute money to our own birthday presents due to someone else’s fuck up, narcissistic mother-in-laws tarnishing the reputation of their daughter-in-laws, we’re afraid of confrontation and will do almost anything to avoid an argument. I can’t possibly see what the benefits of being a people pleaser are, except to those we’re trying to please.
Me: Who is The Recovering People Pleaser?
Me: That is I. My name includes the initial C and I live in Australia. It’s probably no surprise to know I am also a massive introvert.
Me: Why start this blog?
Me: Because reasons. Fuck being nice to people that don’t deserve it. I got sick of being nice and getting taken advantage of. I believe now is as good as time as any. I don’t see any other blogs dedicated to this topic and with over 9000 searches typed into Google every month for the term “people pleaser,” I figured it was a good topic for a blog. Plus, I have a lot to say on the subject, as you’ll soon discover.
Me: What do you hope to bring to this arena?
Me: Mmmm, let’s see. My natural good looks and charm. No, seriously, three things that come to mind are my creativity, a fresh and unique perspective and my back…quite literally – I’ve got your back fellow people pleaser and we’re going to start taking back control and put our own needs ahead of others. It’s time for the revolution to begin.
Thanks RPP, we’re looking forward to the adventure and the stories.
